Zorba the Greek

Zorba the Greek is a novel written by Greek author Nikos Kazantzakis which was first published in 1946. The story revolves around an English writer and intellectual who tries to escape his fixed and too square life with the help of a mysterious, bustling and boisterous man, called Alexis Zorbas. The novel was adapted into a successful movie in 1964 as well as a musical in 1968 titled Zorba. The movie was directed by Cypriot Michael Cacoyannis and the main character was played by Anthony Quinn.
The music from Zorba the Greek was written by the famous Greek composer Mikis Theodorakis. The main song of the film 'Zorbas' is well known in popular culture. This song is based on two traditional Cretan songs, "Armenohorianos Syrtos" and "Kritiko syrtaki" by Giorgis Koutsourelis. The song is now played and danced worldwide. It is instrumental and has no lyrics, but it has captured the hearts of both Greeks and foreigners alike making it a trademark of Greek music.
